However, a paper published in Nature Biotechnology in 2017 showed that amniotic fluid cells can also differentiate into cells of three germ layers, the differentiation ability is similar to embryonic stem cells; but amniotic fluid cells will not form teratomas, and its safety is higher than embryonic stem cells .

Since then, clinical research on amniotic fluid cells has rapidly developed.
